What to expect when you see Mr Kosuge

Mr Kosuge personally performs every private operation. Your first appointment lasts 30 minutes, so there is time to examine you properly, go through your scans and talk through every option, including non-surgical treatment. Follow-up appointments are face to face with Mr Kosuge, not by telephone, unless you would prefer a call. After surgery you will have a nurse-led wound check at two weeks, then see Mr Kosuge at six to eight weeks and again at one year.

Hip and Knee Treatments at The Rivers Hospital

Mr Kosuge offers the full range of hip and knee treatment at The Rivers Hospital, both non-surgical and surgical:

• Hip replacement — total hip replacement for hip arthritis, using the Exeter stem with a Trident or Marathon cup, all rated 15A* by ODEP.

• Double (bilateral) hip replacement — both hips replaced in a single operation for suitable patients with severe arthritis in both hips

• Revision hip replacement — surgery to replace a previous hip replacement that has worn or loosened.

• Knee replacement — total knee replacement using the Attune knee with the S+ tray, including robotic-assisted surgery where it adds something for you (see below).

Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement at The Rivers Hospital

The Rivers Hospital offers the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution for total knee replacement, and Mr Kosuge performs robotic-assisted knee replacement there. Robotic assistance does not replace the surgeon. It adds a detailed, patient-specific plan and real-time feedback that help position the implant and balance the knee.

Mr Kosuge offers both conventional and robotic-assisted total knee replacement, and uses the robot selectively. He recommends it in particular when the alignment of the leg is unusual, for example after a previous fracture or where there is metalwork in the thigh bone. You can also ask for it, and he will explain what it can and cannot offer for your knee. Robotic-assisted surgery is usually covered by private medical insurance, and costs more for self-pay patients.
